pickled onionsThe project Preserving Memories explores the link between food and cultural memory. Some of us lovingly create what our mothers and grandmothers taught us and others are learning for the first time.

The act of preserving helps us to be in contact with the seasons and our cultural heritage. The city of Northcote has a large population of migrants, particularly Italians and Greeks who settled here in the 1950’s and 60’s. They brought with them knowledge about gardening and preserving and still maintain these traditions today. Alongside this is a growing enthusiasm by younger people who enjoy gardening and preserving, partly motivated by concerns about food security and also for the sheer pleasure of enjoying good healthy food.

The exhibition showed for five days as part of the Darebin Homemade Food and Wine Festival 2014. It touched the hearts and minds of around 600 people who came to see the show. We now hope to tour the show to regional centres and other states to explore their preserving traditions and memories.
